International Air Transport Association Launches IATA Connect With Help From Keystone

Keystone worked with IATA to transform aviation safety through IATA Connect, an innovative platform enabling real-time data sharing and automated audits across 330+ airlines, improving industry-wide safety.

Client

The leading trade association for the world’s airlines, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), represents more than 330 airlines and 80% of global air traffic. IATA supports many areas of aviation activity and helps formulate industry policy on critical issues.

Challenge

IATA sought to advance its Safety and Flight Operations (SFO) Audit Programs by creating a digital platform to enhance collaboration among stakeholders like airlines, regulators, auditors, and ground service providers (GSPs). It aimed to foster an ecosystem where these groups could exchange valuable information, improve safety procedures, and facilitate audit processes.

The audit processes at IATA had become insufficient for industry needs due to siloed information, manual practices, and limited analytics. Additionally, safety data was spread across systems making it challenging for IATA and its partners to assess and manage risks dynamically. Key pain points included the need for centralized and real-time information, automation, and continuous monitoring to support IATA’s audit functions and broader safety objectives.

Solution

Keystone and IATA designed the IATA Connect platform to support a shift from traditional safety audits to a connected and collaborative data-driven ecosystem. The proposed solution featured several components:

  • Ecosystem Architecture: Defined platform participants, interactions, and a high-level architecture to streamline stakeholder contributions
  • Platform Capabilities: Developed real-time information sharing, automated workflows, risk-based auditing, continuous monitoring, and performance benchmarking
  • Use Case Prioritization: Identified high-impact use cases initially focused on "Disruption Management" for sharing safety alerts, and "Continuous Safety Monitoring" for airlines and GSPs
  • Phased Rollout: Proposed a three-phase rollout starting with a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for initial engagement, scaling to include risk-based audits, and eventually evolving into a full marketplace for adjacent services
Outcome

With the IATA Connect platform, IATA was positioned to improve both safety and operational efficiency significantly. The solution:

  • Engaged Key Stakeholders: By fostering engagement through prioritized use cases, the platform gained traction among airlines, GSPs, and auditors
  • Increased Data Utilization: Enabled stakeholders to make informed decisions based on real-time data, fostering improved safety and compliance
  • Implemented a Scalable Ecosystem: Set the foundation for future capabilities including integration with AI and ML for predictive analytics, which would support risk-based audits and additional services
  • Improved Financial Viability: Projected breakeven within 18 to 24 months with revenue generated from subscription fees, marketplace transactions, and potential value-added services

This transformation strengthened IATA’s position as a leader in digital safety and compliance within the aviation industry, establishing a collaborative ecosystem that drives continuous safety improvements.
