Cynthia Rudin is the Earl D. McLean, Jr. Professor of Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Statistical Science, Mathematics, and Biostatistics & Bioinformatics at Duke University, as well as the PI of the Interpretable Machine Learning Lab. She has held past positions at MIT, Columbia, and NYU.
Professor Rudin specializes in the design of algorithms for interpretable modeling, interpretable policy design, variable importance measures, causal inference methods, and methods that can incorporate domain-based constraints and domain knowledge into machine learning. Her specific focus is on the use of interpretable machine learning for implementing responsible and trustworthy AI.
Professor Rudin is the winner of the 2022 Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). This is the most prestigious award in artificial intelligence, similar to recognitions such as the Nobel Prize and the Turing Award. She earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University's Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics in 2004, and a BS in Mathematical Physics and BA in Music Theory with a Minor in Computer Science from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) Honors Program.
