New York, NY (March 26, 2025) – Keystone is pleased to announce that Ron Schnell has joined the firm as a Distinguished Technology Fellow inside Keystone’s Advanced Technology Services (K.ATS) team. With over 40 years of experience in software development, source code review, and expert witness testimony in numerous technology cases, Schnell’s expertise enhances Keystone’s Information, Strategy, and Risk Regulation (ISRR) and Technical Investigations practices. The addition of Mr. Schnell further supports Keystone’s market leadership in expert services for technology-related legal and regulatory matters.
Schnell’s career spans leadership roles in both the technology industry and litigation consulting. He has served as a testifying and consulting expert in some of the most consequential cases involving software trade secrets, copyright, patent infringements, and internet privacy related to the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), and wiretapping claims. With a foundational skillset as a programmer, Schnell’s deep technical expertise includes both practice and strategy in artificial intelligence and machine learning, source code review and analysis, software architecture, blockchain, cryptocurrency, privacy and cybersecurity, and advertising/tracking pixels. Notably, Schnell served as the General Manager and chief executive of The Technical Committee, a private corporation established by the U.S. Courts to monitor Microsoft Corporation’s compliance with the 2002 antitrust Final Judgments. Recently, in Bernadine Griffith v. TikTok, the value of Schnell’s diligence was specifically acknowledged by the Court before ultimately dismissing the class certification and ruling in favor of the defendants on summary judgment.
“Ron’s addition to Keystone further illustrates our unique ability to combine seasoned experts and world-class technology to advise our legal and regulatory clients,” said Junsu Choi, Partner and North America Head of Keystone's K.ATS team. “Having a highly specialized understanding of technology and being able to clearly communicate how the technology works is critical for litigation and regulatory matters involving privacy, cybersecurity, algorithmic auditing, and software. Ron’s technical background and experience running large technology organizations, combined with his expertise in litigation and regulatory oversight reinforces our skill in delivering nuanced and persuasive insights at the intersection of law and technology.”
Prior to joining Keystone, Schnell spent 11 years at Berkeley Research Group, where he served as a Managing Director and independent expert, testifying in federal and state courts as well as at depositions and arbitrations, and advising on high-stakes corporate and board-level initiatives. He has held senior leadership roles at large enterprises such as Equifax and technology startups, including one that he scaled and sold to a public company. Schnell is an adjunct professor of computer science at Nova Southeastern University, teaching courses in cybersecurity and operating systems.
“I am excited to join Keystone and collaborate with an exceptional team of data scientists, AI scientists and engineers,” said Schnell. “Keystone’s creative approach of combining economics, technology, business strategy has helped the firm build a world-class reputation and I look forward to being part of the organization.”
Keystone’s K.ATS team, which Schnell will be part of, analyzes, measures, and architects technology in novel and often unprecedented ways. The team has expertise in working with clients on strategic, legal and regulatory matters with machine learning, Generative AI, privacy-enhancing technologies, advertising/tracking pixels, and software more broadly. K.ATS has unequaled capabilities, robust infrastructure, and experience ingesting, parsing and analyzing a wide variety of highly confidential, big data (>100TB) and source code from the world’s largest platforms and tech companies.
“Ron is a highly respected leader in the space – his breadth of experience providing expert witness testimony and technology leadership as well as business strategy consulting makes him a rare talent,” said Rohit Chatterjee, Senior Partner and Global Head of Keystone's K.ATS team. “We are pleased to welcome him to Keystone. His decision to join us reflects our reputation in the industry and commitment to technical excellence in the fields of litigation and strategic consulting.”
